What is an operating system? An operating system is essential software in a computer which enables the user to run programs and applications on the computer.  An operating system is required in order to key in and also for displaying info, etc., on the screen.  An operating system is also required for maintaining files and directories on the disks, for maintaining drives and for the use of printers and other devices.
